Saint Laurent Editions presents DON’T FORGET TO FORGET TO BREATHE by Tiona Nekkia McClodden.
This publication continues the ongoing collaboration between Saint Laurent and Kunsthalle Basel, with Anthony Vaccarello spotlighting the work of Philadelphia-based artist Tiona Nekkia McClodden.
It explores McClodden’s interdisciplinary approach through images of recent installations and artworks featured in her 2023 exhibition, THE POETICS OF BEAUTY WILL INEVITABLY RESORT TO THE MOST BASE PLEADING AND OTHER WILDES IN ORDER TO SECURE ITS RELEASE, staged at Kunsthalle Basel.
“Like A Choke Valve”, a comprehensive analytical essay by former Kunsthalle Basel Director (now Director of Kunstmuseum Basel), Elena Filipovic, further contextualizes McClodden’s work and her evolving relationship with airflows after being diagnosed with sleep apnea.
BOOK specificities:
The book visually evolves across its pages echoing the rhythms of breathing: INHALE/EXHALE. It reflects McClodden’s multifaceted approach by combining elements of a hardcover book, an exhibition catalogue and an artwork.
The book is divided in two parts: the first one reflects the two video artworks that were exhibited in the show, thanks to two flipbook-like narratives. The Second part shows the artwork through a walk-thru style inspired narrative & layout, echoing also a performance given by the artist, that was part of the exhibition.

Hand-painted, bound, and embossed Saint Laurent Masoil leather hides, crafted by the artist herself. A leather strap, one of the artist's original works, encircles the book. Three such straps were part of the artwork, with one allocated to each book and bound with 25 feet of hand dyed jute rope.
